SPP-S280 – Structure Protection Crew Leader (SPCL)

Prerequisites and Participant Eligibility

  • Wildland Fire Fighter-1 (SPP-WFF1) or S-100/S-185
  • SPP-115 Wildland Structure Protection Program
  • ICS 200
  • FireSmart - Wildfire Risk Reduction Course (online)
  • S-211 Fire Weather (CIFFC)
  • S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behaviour (CIFFC)
  • Demonstrated operational experience supporting wildfire response within the past three years, including significant deployment to provincial structure protection operations (Recommended)

Course pre-work will be assigned 4 weeks prior to the conference.


Course Description

Designed for Structure Protection Crew leaders, Fire Department Officers and Provincial Single Resources, this course provides the foundational Leadership concepts centred around Roles & Responsibilities, Safety & Risk Management, Operations, Administration & Documentation in the Wildland Urban Interface. Combined with mid-scale structure protection resource planning and enhanced tactical decision making. 


Course Structure

The SPCL is a one-day/8-hour course designed to evaluate and improve on skills learned as a SPC through prior training and field experience. The course is presented in a lecture/discussion format with group and tabletop exercisesStudents will present and be tested on their reasoning for structure protection operations based on safety zones, expected fire behaviour, water supplies, interface environment, and resources available. Safety and the Operational Environment are primary focuses.
