TRAINING PROGRAM

FIRESMART COURSES | APRIL 12-13



Local FireSmart Representative - Assessments – 1 DAY (Sunday)

Prerequisites:

Course Description:

This one-day (8 hours) field-based training is designed to equip Local FireSmart Representatives (LFRs) with the essential skills needed to assess critical infrastructure (CI), homes , and neighborhoods for wildfire resilience. Participants who have completed the online self-paced LFR training will gain hands-on experience conducting Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessments, a requirement for certification. This course provides an opportunity for practical learning, mentorship, and skill reinforcement where participants can confidently carry out their responsibilities as LFRs.

Course Structure:

LFRs who have completed the online self-paced training must conduct at least three HIZ assessments to meet certification requirements. Transportation will be provided. While PPE (boots, hardhat, gloves, etc.) is not required, it is advised to dress for outdoor activities. Bringing a tablet for conducting assessments is recommended; however, tablets may be provided depending on availability, or paper copies will be available if needed.  We will carefully review the necessary pre and post-assessment duties, and thoroughly conduct:

  1. Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessment
  2. Critical Infrastructure (CI) assessment
  3. Neighbourhood Wildfire Hazard assessment

Target Audience:

  • FireSmart Coordinators, fire-knowledgeable individuals, firefighters, WUI specialists, forestry professionals
  • Emergency management and wildfire management staff

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Equip participants with the practical skills and confidence to conduct HIZ, CI, and Neighbourhood Assessments.
  • Provide mentoring support to ensure participants can perform these assessments confidently.
  • Offer support for new LFRs who have completed the online portion but require the mentoring component to complete the course.
  • Provide a refresher for existing LFRs looking to refresh their assessment skills.


Wildfire Mitigation Specialist ‘Train the Trainer’ – 2 DAYS

Prerequisites:

  • Wildfire Mitigation Specialist certification  
  • 1+ years as a Local Program Coordinator
  • Field experience as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist

Course Description:

This course is designed to train Local Program Coordinators in the Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Program to administer and certify users from their agency as Wildfire Mitigation Specialists.

Course Structure

Classroom based learning.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Prepare students to instruct the Wildfire Mitigation Specialist training to staff in their agency.
  • Provide thorough instruction on key messaging and learning objectives of the Wildfire
  • Mitigation Program
  • Provide knowledge to instruct future students in wildfire behaviour, building basics, wildland urban interface, forest considerations, assessment process, and program management.
